Who Qualifies for TRT?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medically supervised hormone replacement therapy that can offer important medical benefits to adult men whose natural testosterone levels are too low or unbalanced. There are several reasons why someone may qualify for TRT, some of which include:

  • Primary hypogonadism – a condition that is caused by a problem with the testes in which the body does not produce enough testosterone on its own
  • Secondary hypogonadism – a condition that is caused by an abnormality in the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, or other parts of the brain resulting in inadequate secretion of hormones necessary for normal testicular function
  • Genetic conditions – such as Klinefelter’s Syndrome and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, both of which affect fertility and testosterone production
  • Aging – Low testosterone levels naturally occur in aging men due to changes in hormone balance
  • Tumors or cancer treatments – Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other treatments can disrupt hormone production and cause low testosterone levels

The first step is to speak with your doctor about whether Testosterone Replacement Therapy might be right for you. Make sure to discuss any potential risks associated with it. The doctor will conduct a physical exam and order lab tests to determine if your testosterone levels are at an appropriate level. Depending on your results, he/she may recommend starting TRT or other treatment options.
